Heatwave: How to protect yourself during the heat?

Everyone in a heatwave has tips on how to keep your body cool. But what advice is scientifically proven during the hottest days of the year? Let’s talk about it.

Cold Drinks Or Hot Tea?

More water and other beverages are the right decision during a heatwave. By doing this we can make up for the lack of water in the body and save our kidneys. But the debate continues over whether to drink cold drinks or coffee.

The theory behind drinking hot drinks is that it warms your body temporarily. You sweat a lot and it cools your body. The human body can excrete about two liters of sweat every hour. This is considered good advice for lowering body temperature.

But if after sweating, its place and fluid do not enter the body, your body may become dehydrated. That’s why some people recommend avoiding hot drinks altogether.

Some experts say you should not drink too much tea or coffee because some of them contain dehydrating caffeine. But there is little evidence that moderate amounts of caffeine cause more urination.

However, some studies have found that cold drinks are better. Some experts have done research on people who exercise more. Their body temperature was assessed after hot and cold drinks, and it was found that cold drinks played a more effective role in cooling them from within.

But one problem with these results is the way we measure temperature. Volunteers were given rectal thermometers. According to Professor Olli J. of the University of Ottawa, cold drinks enter the stomach directly, not far from the rectal thermometer. Therefore, it is not surprising that the temperature is low.

When his team measured the temperature from different parts of the body with the help of eight thermometers, it was found that hot drinks cool the body more because it is predicted to sweat more.

Therefore, experts believe that hot drinks instead of cold drinks make you sweat more and lower your body temperature.

How Much Difference Does A Fan Make In A Heatwave?

Fan air often calms us down. But fans do not cool the air. They move the air and dry the sweat, which lowers the body temperature.

Experts are divided on the usefulness of feathers. According to some, they are helpful, but some say that it is not possible to cool the body when the temperature is high enough.

It is generally believed that fans up to 35 degrees Celsius are useful. At higher temperatures (as some studies have cited as 37 degrees Celsius), the fan’s hot air becomes a hindrance to the body’s autonomic system. When the situation worsens, people may have a heatstroke. Keeping the fan running in hot weather can also increase dehydration.

Fans are less effective in humid weather. The wings carry air, but moisture in the air makes it difficult for sweat to dry.

Until further research, it is difficult to say how useful feathers are in extreme heat. Therefore, some experts recommend keeping the fans off when the temperature is above 37 degrees Celsius.

Opening All The Windows?

When it’s hot and heatwave, the first thing most of us do is open all the windows. But it can also have negative effects during the day.

You should only open windows when the outside air is colder than the inside air. This is more likely to happen at night. In hot weather, you should keep your windows closed during the day, as the shade inside makes it more likely that the air inside will be less warm. If the hot air blows, your body will not be able to cool down and this air may cause pollen allergy.

That is, if the outside air is hotter than the inside air, keep the windows closed. This can be done when the weather improves at night.
